How sad.
I mean can't this country and its people get a break? If the horrendous Haiti Earthquake wasn't bad enough, now these poor people are suffering from a cholera outbreak.
Cholera is a disease that occurs due to an infection of the small intestine by Vibrio cholerae. It is generally transmitted by contaminated food and water supplies. Due to the cholera toxin that is released by the bacteria, rapid secretion of essential electrolytes into the lumen of the small intestines occur. Due to osmosis, the water supply of the body quickly follows suit, leading to severe dehydration that can quickly lead to death if not treated.
Cholera has not really been an issue in the carribbean for nearly fifty years. Perhaps is just shows how dire the Haiti situation is.
Personally, I am a strong believer in helping those less fortunate and helping those willing to help themselves. But even more than that, lets all do our part, in helping, by showing we care, by doing what we can, and by teaching and providing guidance to those that may need to be shown that their is a light at the end of the tunnel.
