Proffessor Fernando Patolsky of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler School of Chemistry, in Tel Aviv University, has developed a novel and powerful electronic detector of explosives. The most effective explosive that the detector can sense at the moment is TNT, although researchers indicate that the sensors can detect many other forms of explosives as well, including the Yemen device, an al Qaeda bomb that was recently found in a cargo plane of a US bound flight from England. One day, it is thought such sensors could be used one day to detect other biological warfare, toxins and perhaps even drugs.
While more research is necessary, the inventors feel that this device is much more effective than a canine's ability of smell. Although the price of such a sensor is still quite expensive and its utilization is a bit labor intensive, it does show an interesting device that may one day make terrorism a lot more difficult.
Perhaps it will give some cute dogs some long needed rest and relaxation too.
