Dry skin, dandruff, skin flakes; isn't this stuff just disgusting? How can it be good?
Well it is, according to a study published in Environmental Science & Technology. Our old skin can actually reduce air pollution is our houses. Apparently oils and cholesterol from our skin cells, according to older studies, will theoretically reduce ozone, an important pollutant (which simultaneously is a life saver against dangerous solar radiation in the upper atmosphere) that can exacerbate asthma.
In the present study, researchers took it further, and looked at dust in various homes and daycare centers and found that in places that had higher levels of skin oils, flaky skin and cholesterol, ozone was lower.
So maybe dust has its place in the world and is not just a nuisance to mom's across the world. Maybe we should spread our skin around our house and reduce that annoying ozone.
The skinny on how shed skin reduces indoor air pollution
